About My Research

Broadly speaking, my academic research focuses on Ireland, art and history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to an interest in cities as spaces of artistic life and production, I am also interested in themes of travel, artistic networks, and cultural exchange, especially in relation to Ireland and the British Empire.

I am currently working on three research topics: the exhibition of British and French paintings in nineteenth century Ireland; Jack B. Yeats and New York; and William B. Yeats and Dublin art institutions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

My first monograph, Painting Dublin, 1886 – 1949, was published by Manchester University Press in 2020. Copies can be ordered from Kennys, the Gutterbook Shop, University Books, the National Gallery of Ireland, and Manchester University Press.

A paperback edition of Painting Dublin will be published in October 2021, and can now be pre-ordered from the Gutterbookshop, Books Upstairs, and MUP.

‘A rich – and enriching – volume, informed by an obvious love of the city.’
